Hi all,
This week, we dive into Central Asia’s history and the fascinating story of the Jadids - Muslim modernists and progressives who operated in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, and who have greatly influenced local education, literature an art.
Purged by Stalin, they have recently been reclaimed by Uzbekistan as national heroes.
In today’s episode, I speak to Adeeb Khalid, a prolific historian and an authority on the Jadids and Islam in Central Asia. I have asked him about the circumstances in which Jadids developed their ideas, what they wanted to achieve, how they viewed the world and the social and political changes of their times, and their relations with the Soviet authorities.
I hope you will enjoy this episode.
Have a great week!
